Richard Leek, Bass

Although I was born in New York state, I have lived in Tucson for over 50 years. Most of my education was here in Tucson Unified School District and the University of Arizona. I studied bass with Yvonne Tait in elementary and junior high, Norman Clark during high school, Casper Malone at the U of A  as well as Fred Batchelder of the Philidelphia Orchestra. I am a graduate of Rincon High, and received a Bachelor of Music degree from the U of A as well as a Masters of Music Educaton from Central Connecticut University.  I have been a public school music teacher as well as a private teacher for over 40 years. I will be starting my 45th year as a bassist with the Tucson Symphony as well as my 43rd year with the Tucson Pops Orchestra. I have also performed with most other orchestras in the Tucson area including the Arizona Opera and Southern Arizona Symphony. On the side, I enjoying playing violin in chamber music groups.

I am officially retired as a teacher from TUSD but have returned to teach beginning strings part time. One of my other activities that keep me very busy is foster parenting. My oldest is 20 and is studying violin at New England Concervatory in Boston. I currently also have two teenagers at home of which one is also a violinist.  There is a big need  for foster parents, especially for teens, and I am trying to be of help.
