The Tucson Symphony Orchestra plays over 60 concerts every season with over 30 different programs. Some use the full orchestra, some use a small one and some use a chamber ensemble, ten people or fewer. You can read about all of our different concert series to the right. Opening night sparkles with the return of our friend, Alain Lefèvre, performing Ravel’s Concerto for Piano in G major and presenting an intimate side of Andre Mathieu whose works have brought the TSO international visibility. Borodin’ Symphony No. 2 remains the most well-known symphony by any of the members of the Russian Mighty Five. Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture is the climactic finale to any opening night!

Don’t miss the opportunity of a world premiere and Richard Strauss’s sublime Four Last Songs in this exciting evening of music and poetry. Lizst’s Les Préludes inspired a new musical form – the symphonic tone poem. Stephen Paulus’ work sets three poems of Dylan Thomas, selected by Dr. Helen S. Schaefer, to music for soprano and orchestra and features the TSO debut of Elizabeth Futral, one of today’s most in-demand sopranos.

Romance abounds amongst these American works! Guest pianist Michael Sheppard performs Gershwin’s jazzy and sensuous Piano Concerto in F. Copland’s Suite from Appalachian Spring is a beautiful portrayal of American frontier values and Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, “Romantic” is a masterpiece of neo-romanticism. The world premiere, “Celebration” is a ‘musical chain letter’, a fun celebration of contemporary compositional talent.
