Formed in 1928–29 as the first professional symphony orchestra in the Southwest, the TSO is the longest continuously performing professional arts organization in Arizona. The mission of the organization is to build and enrich community through the experience of live music of the highest quality. The TSO serves nearly a hundred thousand patrons annually, including 30,000 students, through concerts, educational programming, and outreach. More than 1,000 donors and stakeholders support the TSO’s work on stage, in schools, and in the community.

Under the artistic leadership of Music Director José Luis Gomez since 2016, the TSO’s vision is to reflect its many communities and bring them together through music, creating deeper connections with the region’s heritage and making music for all Tucson and southern Arizona.

The Opportunity

The Development Manager–Annual Campaign joins a dynamic fundraising team at an exciting time, with access to positive mentors and the opportunity to grow. Under the guidance and supervision of the VP of Philanthropy, and in coordination with the Director of Philanthropy (Major Individual Gifts), this position plays a lead role in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding the commitment of donors to the TSO.

Duties and Responsibilities

Annual Fund

  • Develops and implements key strategies to grow the donor base and contributed revenue to include achieving high retention, upgrades among renewing donors, and significant new acquisitions.
  • Manages and administers process and timeline for multiple direct mail annual appeals and supporting digital and social campaigns, including copywriting, design, and list selection.
  • Engages in qualification, cultivation, and solicitation visits with a portfolio of donors up to $2,500+ to meet or exceed goals in conjunction with the overall annual development plan.
  • Assists Director of Philanthropy, Senior Management, and Board Leadership in cultivating and managing key relationships with donors.
  • Engages donors in person, over the phone, and through other forms of communications to foster and encourage relationships.
  • Meets and interacts regularly with donors.
  • Develops and uses collaborative relationships with the board and key volunteers to strengthen the fund-raising skills and effectiveness of the annual fund.
  • Serves as staff liaison to the Tucson Symphony Orchestra League and Cotillion.
  • Manages an annual phone-a-thon.
  • Establishes overall strategy for annual giving day efforts such as Giving Tuesday.
  • Works with the Database Manager to develop analytical and tracking reports to monitor the success of all mailings, solicitations, and campaigns.
  • Coordinates development materials and communications for print, onsite, and online distribution including brochures, pamphlets, web content, e-blasts and other correspondence.
  • Participates in monthly Board Development Committee meetings with follow-up on key action items.
  • Assists and participates in development events and programs.
  • Works collaboratively and productively with TSO colleagues, especially in Marketing and Production.

Stewardship

  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with individual donors, volunteers, and
    community stakeholders.
  • Fulfills donor benefits.
  • Assures that all donors are accurately recognized in Program Books and other recognition materials.

Database

  • Effectively uses and leverages the TSO’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, DonorPerfect and wealth screening software.
  • Provides back-up to the Database Manager on gift entry and acknowledgment as needed.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate work experience
  • 1–2 years prior experience in a fundraising or sales related position
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Demonstrated success managing and using a database
  • Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data related to donor giving
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Attention to detail and excellent planning and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Positive attitude and team-oriented work style
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituents, including community volunteers and stakeholders
  • Commitment to outstanding customer service
  • Essential Functions:
    • Able to lift up to 25 lbs.
    • Available to work nights and weekends for concert duty and development events
    • Available to travel to performances throughout Pima County as needed
    • Maintain an active driver’s license and vehicle insurance

Preferable Skills and Qualifications

  • Passion for Music, prior experience working in the arts is a plus.

Position Details

Title: Development Manager–Annual Campaign
Reports to: VP of Philanthropy
Hours: hourly, 40 hours/week
Compensation: $45,000–$50,000 annually, commensurate with experience
