Led by TSO Principal Percussionist Dr. Trevor Barroero, Tucson Youth Percussion Ensemble (TYPE) is a high-level, supplemental ensemble for middle and high school percussionists. Students will receive weekly coaching from TSO musicians, develop professional chamber music skills, and perform diverse repertoire ranging from traditional percussion ensemble pieces to new works composed specifically for TYPE.

TYPE is designed to strengthen the skills students bring back to their school band, orchestra, and marching programs. Performance opportunities will include standalone concerts, pop-up performances before TSO events, and side-by-side appearances with the professional TSO Percussion Quartet. Students will also have leadership and community-service opportunities through TSO-supported bucket drumming and group drumming ensemble events.

TYPE runs from early September through mid-May on Saturdays from 3:00–4:30 PM at the Tucson Symphony Center. We understand that students may have school music commitments, including marching band events, and TYPE is intended to complement, not replace, those programs.
