Selections from
Ludwig van Beethoven: Septet in E♭ Major, Op. 20 for clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello, and bass
Beethoven’s Septet, composed in 1799, was such a popular work that Beethoven later regretted writing it. Much like his First Symphony, the Septet harks back to Haydn or Mozart in style; the older and more innovative Beethoven dismissed it for lacking seriousness. The cheerful and elegant Septet is a tour de force for the clarinet, which requires nearly equal virtuosity to the violin.
