José Luis Gomez, conductor

Franz Liszt: The Black Gondola (arr. John Adams)
Richard Wagner: Siegfried Idyll
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 40

José’s Take:

At Wagner’s death in Venice Liszt immediately sat down and wrote a mysterious and heart-breaking tribute, The Black Gondola. To follow, I’ve programmed the most beautiful of musical love letters, Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, written for his wife Cosima—Liszt’s daughter.

Mozart’s next-to-last symphony begins with an unforgettable texture. More than three centuries later, I question whether anyone has equaled its drama and pathos.
