Francisco Fullana, the 2022–23 TSO Artist in Residence returns to Tucson to perform Saint-Saëns’ dazzling Third Violin Concerto under the direction of Manuel Hernández Silva alongside orchestral showpieces by Brahms and Tchaikovsky, and a charming new piece by Israeli Gili Schwarzman.
Saint-Saëns was the master of the concerto form, and this piece showcases all the lyrical and technical flair that audiences have come to love, with an added dash of Spanish color, a nod to the work’s virtuoso first performer, Pablo de Sarasate. Based on student songs, Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture is a boisterous romp and an audience favorite. And Francesca da Rimini, Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem about Dante’s doomed lovers, is a whirlwind of passion descending through the circles of hell. Fun stuff! Individual event tickets go on sale August 1, 2025. This concert is available as part of a Classic Series or Create Your Own Subscription. This concert will be preceded by Concert Comments, a pre-concert talk, beginning one hour before each performance. Linda Ronstadt Music Hall has a clear bag policy. Read more about this venue Brahms never attended college, but received an honorary doctorate from the University of Breslau (for which occasion this overture was composed). A few years later, Tchaikovsky composed a symphonic poem inspired by another doomed couple, Romeo and Juliet! Saint-Saëns was a child prodigy to rival the earlier Mozart. He could sing in perfect pitch at the age of two, and gave his first concert on the piano at the age of five! A prolific composer, he also found time to be an expert in geology, botany, and butterflies!Plan Your Visit
