Meet Ellen Ensey, TSO Violin

What age did you start playing music?

I started on piano at age 2; violin at age 4

When did you know that you wanted to pursue music professionally?

Probably by the time I was in 4th or 5th grade

If you could program a TSO concert, what music would you select and why?

I would love to do some of the more obscure Stravinsky Ballets, like Apollo (I think we last did it in 2004?).  I would be most excited to have Leonidas Kavakos come to play the original version of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto.

Which concert have you enjoyed performing the most this season and why?

I most enjoyed playing the Classics program in December.  Brahms 2 is such a fantastic piece, and it was amazing to have Steven (Moeckel) back as our guest Concertmaster.

What do you love about the violin in general and your instrument in particular?

The violin is so wide-ranging in its sound and expression!  That’s probably why we play all the time in everything!  I’ve been playing for nearly 40 years, and I still feel the instrument challenges me.  My particular violin is turning 140 years old this year, and I love the richness and fullness of its sound, particularly in the lower register.

What do you love about Tucson?

I love that Tucson feels like a small town and a big city at the same time.  There is such a richness of culture and nature here too!  I’m fortunate to live right by a system of hiking trails, so enjoying the beautiful weather and unique landscape is literally just steps away from my front door.
