Will Remain as Music Director Through 2024
(Tucson, AZ)─The Tucson Symphony Orchestra today announced that Maestro José Luis Gomez has signed a four-year extension to his original four year contract. Gomez will now continue as the TSO’s Music Director through 2024.
“We are thrilled Maestro Gomez will remain with the TSO through 2024,” stated Autumn Van Den Berg, TSO Board Chair. “In just two seasons he has demonstrated his talents in music and in helping the TSO achieve its goals in programing, community engagement, partnerships and education.”
Speaking on behalf of TSO musicians, violinist Carlie Rigg, Chair of the Orchestra Committee, said: “Jose is a wonderful musician and a great asset to the community. We look forward to many more successful concerts.” TSO musicians recently ratified a new three year contract through August, 2021.
“In these first two seasons we have made such great music together, why would we want to stop?” commented Maestro Gomez. “I see great potential in the TSO and I am happy to be a part of achieving it.”
José Luis Gomez was named the 17th Music Director in the history of the Tucson Symphony in 2015. During his tenure he has conducted sold-out performances of Yo-Yo Ma, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Pink Martini, led the orchestra in a performance for more than 100,000 people at the All Souls Day Finale Ceremony, commissioned four new works and conducted the TSO in an internationally aired radio broadcast observing the 100th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth in partnership with the Tucson Desert Song Festival. Gomez will announce the Tucson Symphony’s 91st season next month.
