School Tax Credit Assistance FAQ

What is the Arizona Public School Tax Credit?

The Arizona Public School Tax Credit is a dollar for dollar reduction on the taxes you owe the State of Arizona. You get to decide how your tax dollars are used!

Why is tax credit important/how does it support TSO?

Tax Credit contributions give schools in your community the necessary funds to participate in TSO’s award-winning music education programs.

How do I participate?

(1) Choose a school from the list on this page.

(2) Make your check payable to the school you’ve chosen.

(3) Write “TSO Education Programs” on the memo line.

(4) Fill out a Tax Credit Form and mail it and the check to the TSO.

How much can I contribute?

If you are married and file jointly, you can contribute up to $400; if you file single, you can contribute up to $200.

How does this effect my taxes?

This is a “credit”, not a “deduction”. Credits reduce your tax liability, whereas deductions reduce how much of your income is subject to taxes. A credit of $400 reduces your tax bill by $400. Basically, contributing means you are deciding where the money you’ve already paid in taxes is being spent.

Should I contribute directly to the school instead of going through TSO?

Going through TSO ensures that you tax dollars are used for our programs – direct support of music education in your community. And, going through TSO help us to track the progress for schools who have requested funds.

Who should I make the check out to?

Please make checks payable to the school you want to support, with “TSO Education Programs” in the memo. This ensures the school will receive the money, and that it will be designated appropriately.

Can I contribute online?

Yes! Contributions can be made online to schools in some districts, and links can be found on most school district websites. If you do contribute online, please indicate “TSO Education Programs” on the online form to ensure direction of funds and, please make sure to e-mail TSO a copy of your receipt along with a filled-out TSO Tax Credit Form.

Where is the “Tax Credit Form”?

The form can be downloaded here. Or, email the Education Team to have one sent to you via email. Hard copies may be available at some TSO concerts.

Is there a deadline to contribute?

Yes and no. Contributions to be claimed for the current tax year can be made through April 15. Contributions after that date can be claimed on you taxes for the following year.

What information do I need to file correctly?

You will receive all the information you need from the school/district to which you made your contribution. This information will include county code, type code, district code and site number – those can also be found on the Arizona Department of Revenue Website.

Can I contribute to a school that isn’t on the Tax Credit list?

Yes, but contributing to a school not signed up for a TSO Education program means that money may not be used as intended if the school never enrolls in a TSO Education program – consider reaching out to your local school to encourage them to enroll in TSO programs!

I have additional questions that were not answered here.

No problem! Reach out to TSO Education Staff to learn more.
